Gr 7 Up-Framing her discussion within an examination of the media influence on our culture's definition of beauty, Libal does an excellent job of discussing the risks and benefits of cosmetics, piercing and tattooing, diet, exercise, and cosmetic surgery. Emphasis is given to the traps people fall into regarding body image, feminine as well as masculine. The author also considers, in some detail, the dangers of anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and steroid use. The section on cosmetics cites the dangers of specific ingredients commonly found in shampoos, moisturizers, and powders and will be useful for assignments. The full-color photographs and cartoons don't contribute much information, but do add visual appeal.
