Gr 7-10 The title is sufficient to ensure this book's initial popularity. Moreover, Conford's empathetic depiction of adolescent confusion and her deftly humorous narration will guarantee it continued momentum. Stephanie, 16, is smart and thoughtful but klutzy. At five feet nine, she considers herself the ``incredible hulk,'' doomed to be dateless. Spurred by a required research project for her psychology class, she determines to investigate the what and why of Love. Best friend Amy disappoints Steffie by falling so hard for a mohawk-haired motorcyclist that her I.Q. falls 40 points. Then Trevor, the high school ' s Don Juan, surprises Steffie by turning her interview with him into a suave come-on. Steady but unromantic friend Jon disturbs her with his jealousy. But most of all, Steffie dismays herself when she falls for the unlikely Bash, a leather-jacketed school dropout. With two loves aflame, she abandons the research project, ``preferring experience to analysis,'' eventually concluding that, ``There is absolutely nothing rational about love.'' Laced with pithy observations, tense moments of crisis, and lively dialogue, this well-realized agony of love should be an applauded addition to most collections. From the moment Stephanie asks herself, in the form of a school project, ``Why do fools fall in love?'' her own personal life becomes fraught with disaster and mishap. Her platonic relationship with Jon seems headed for more turbulent waters; Trevor, the kind of boy a parent dreams of for a daughter, starts to put the moves on her; and Bash takes her on motorcycle rides where more than the turns are scary. It's three against one, and while Stephanie figures out just who it is she loves, readers will have a fine time trying to outguess Conford's fast moves and broadly comic scenes. Despite a bit of a cliche regarding Bash (the tough dropout with the heart of gold dates back at least to James Dean), this book will help lift the back-to-school blues. Ages 11-up. Stephanie knows less than zilch about love, but decides to write her term paper for psych class on ""Why Do Fools Fall In Love?,"" hoping to find out what it is and how to get some. We gather from first-person knocking of her size and awkwardness that her self-image is pretty bad, too. But suddenly into her life comes an assortment of males: an old pal becomes amorous; the school hunk, Trevor, comes by in his Porsche; and Bash vrooms in on his motorcycle. Of course, Bash is the one with real magnetism; he may be a high-school dropout and wear leather, but he is the only one who says, ""Love is not just making out."" Stephanie's paper concludes that there is nothing rational about falling in love. If you want to get analytical, there's not much rationality to the book, either. Stephanie's parents actually let her go out with this junkyard employee in leather; Bash has managed save money working in depressed conditions and has bought an expensive bike; there is a happy ending for all. But it is still a lot of fun, given Conford's funny, conversational style and the frothy plot. It's bound to say some of the right things to many young folks who need to hear that tall, gawky girls can find love and that hoods can be changed--somewhat. Because she never has had a boyfriend or experienced romance, Stephanie Kasden decides to dedicate her psychology project to unraveling ``the mysterious working of the human heart.'' She quickly discovers it is no simple task, and complications ensue. The high school Lothario mistakes her interest for a come-on; she thinks her childhood friend John has developed a crush on her; and, to her own surprise (and her parents' alarm), she falls head over heels for an attractive, leather-jacketed high school dropout. To this ready comic mixture Conford adds a bit of yeast: a message about class snobbery (despite the author's efforts motorcyle jockeys still come across as a somewhat dubious bunch) and a word or two about spiting oneself to spite one's parents. Readers will eventually lose track of the class project angle (as does Conford herself), and while that may be briefly annoying, it won't spoil the pleasantly humorous perspective on a subject they may be trying to figure out themselves.
