Gr 7 UpA well-intended but flawed effort. The authors assert that girls in American society are especially vulnerable to mistaken notions about image, self-esteem, and options that lead to problems. Members of the target audience are urged to think for themselves and to make positive choices that will enhance their present lives and protect their futures. Running through the text is the theme, "You have the power to choose well." The first three sections consist of discussions of alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, unhealthy eating patterns, and physical and sexual abuse. Information is supplemented with firsthand testimonies by young women who have experienced these problems. There are suggestions for getting help, including traditional and online sources. The last section describes steps for taking charge of one's life. However, the diffuse, patchwork organization, repetitive style, and preachy tone detract from the title's ability to deliver its all-important messages and may be a turnoff to the intended audience.Libby K.
