摘要
This highly praised series of books has been in print since the 1950s (launched originally by Franklin Watts himself). Today's First Books provide engaging, in-depth introductions to subjects in all areas of the middle-grade curriculum, including science, social studies, and the arts.
Illustrated with color and historical photography and art, each First Book is chaptered, includes an index, a for-further-reading list and, where appropriate, a glossary and original maps.

Gr 3-5This informative overview of the role of camouflage in the natural world will be of interest to report writers and browsers alike. Similar in content to Nancy Farrell's Camouflage (Watts, 1989; o.p.), Perry's book organizes information into chapters that deal with specific animal groups; e.g., mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and ocean life; it then describes the camouflage techniques most effective in their native habitats. Masking, polymorphism, mimicry, disguise, and disruptive coloration, used both by predator and prey, are covered. The full-color photographs are clear and eye-catching, and challenge viewers to determine the type of camouflage in use. Captions are highlighted in bright colors, adding further to the visual appeal of the inviting, open format. A useful book in an area where there is always reader interest.Diane Nunn, Richard E. These books describe animals that, in order to survive, have evolved in quite unusual ways. These animals escape predators by balancing on water, blending in with their surroundings, or fighting back with horns, spines, and venom. The authors focus on structure-function relationships and animal behavior. Color photographs and captions accompany the texts. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010.
