Gr 5-9 While this is an adequate state book for young readers, it is not the best currently available. On the plus side, Dunnahoo provides quite a bit of information, including some interesting facts on the history of Alaska, totem poles, significance of oil discoveries and major cities. The writing style is clear, and information is current. However, too many weaknesses dilute the overall effectiveness of the presentation. Black-and-white photos are adequate to poor in quality. The inclusion of only two maps often leads to lack of comprehension at best and confusion at worst. Vocabulary is difficult for a ``first'' book: terms such as subsistence, bartered, moraine, and compensation are used. Overall organization is not as clear as Carpenter's Alaska (Childrens, 1979), and the index omits many topics that are covered in the text.
