Kirkus评论
An anthology with a recent Asimov robot story and a recent Damon Knight anything is bound to rouse more than its share of expectations. The added presence of Harlan Ellison, Fritz Leiber, James Tiptree, Jr., Gene Wolfe, and Jack Williamson borders on the improbable. Not everyone is in top form (Leiber dreadfully fey, Williamson rather plodding), but Knight's cool, bitter fable of the surveillant society is carried off with all the understated poise one remembers. And Asimov's ""Bicentennial Man"" may be the most handsomely written work in the 37-year history of his robotics series. Other honors go to Christopher Priest's gentle love story ""frozen"" in time, Wolfe's Oz-haunted odyssey, and Steven Utley and Howard Waldrop's straightfaced account of ""Custer's Last Jump""--an alternate-history chronicle (cannibalized from Carr's Universe 6) that already promises to become something of a classic. Remarkably strong collection. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
