Gr 4-6-- Like others in this series, this book has a remarkable way of teaching readers through participation. Experiments about fossilization, dinosaurs, and paleontology will attract even the most jaded students. (Particularly interesting experiments include a Jello model of rock stratification, giant cardboard footprints created to measure a dinosaur's stride, and a list of dinosaur prefixes and suffixes to allow readers to make up their own dinosaur names. Take that, you Laloperossaurus! Babbling, deformed lizard.) Unfortunately, the lack of a good index may discourage researchers from finding the information they need; it also makes any access except a cover-to-cover reading difficult, which may intimidate slow readers. Another detractor--the brown-and-white line drawings aren't particularly enticing, and they aren't always clear (differentiating unlabeled nostril holes and eye holes in skulls of a Brachiosaurus and an elephant is difficult). Despite these flaws, this book successfully brings the science of paleontology into children's lives and lets them participate in the excitement of making their own dinosaur discoveries. Teachers, librarians, and parents will find it a creative source for dinosaur-related activities, too.-- Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. A mind-stretching look at dinosaurs, including experiments, puzzles, projects, and activities to develop and enhance readers' understanding of geologic time, fossils, and paleontology. Fresh, lively writing and clever, humorous line drawings clarify complex concepts and make this a fascinating browsing book for general readers as well as dinosaur fans. Analogies here are inspired: rock strata and such related concepts as overthrust, uplifting, faulting, and erosion, for example, become clear as demonstrated with a four layer gelatin mold; geologic time is easier to understand if you have walked off a million years in terms of yards on a football field. Using scientific clues, the reader decides which of six pictured beasts is really a dinosaur. There is an excellent explanation of why scientists have recently suggested that dinosaurs may have been warmblooded. No index, but the contents notes are informative. Includes a lists of museums and dinosaur parks in the US, plus definitions of tongue-tangling dinosaur names created from descriptive Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes--with suggestions for using them to invent new dinosaurs or friends' nicknames. An excellent example of science writing that informs, involves, and delights. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
