《书目》(Booklist)书评
Casey Stengel, a member of baseball's Hall of Fame, led the New York Yankees to 10 pennants and seven World Series championships from 1948 through 1960. In 12 full seasons managing other major league teams, his best finish was fifth in an eight-team league. Some have doubted Stengel's managerial skills, pointing out that those Yankee teams had an abundance of talent and would have dominated with any skipper. But whatever his credentials, Stengel was a lifetime baseball man who spent years, as a player and manager, in both the penthouse and the outhouse. Berkow and Kaplan, sports journalists with impressive credentials, have combed the research files and interviewed many of the Ol' Perfesser's former players. Stengel's wisdom, which often applied to life outside the foul lines, is most often related in typical Stengelese, an idiosyncratic dialect that alternately confuses and amuses. One of Casey's favorite rejoinders was, "You could look it up." Now we've got the book in which to do so. As Case would say: "They done splendid." ~--Wes Lukowsky
