A readable chronicle. Sabin was a scientific researcher, a doctor, an educator, and an advocate of improved health regulations in Colorado; Kronstadt's in-depth portrait of this humanitarian includes a list of Sabin's publications, highlights of her 40-year career, and books for ``Further Reading''--only two of which are still in print, and which appear to be extremely scholarly and far above the reading level of this book. No other full-length biography of Sabin is available at this reading level. This addition to a first-rate series will surely add to Sabin's prominence in the chronicles of medicine, science, education, and women's history. For all collections, and especially for those with a demand for biographies of women. --April L. Judge, Thousand Oaks Library, CALISTER, Robin, retel. The Legend of King Arthur. illus. by Alan Baker. 93p. CIP. Doubleday. 1990. Tr $15.95. ISBN 0-385-26369-4 . LC 88-36262. Gr 5-8-- Merlin, locked in stony enchantment, recounts the legends of King Arthur in this succinct, fast-paced retelling. Major themes are covered, with the use of prophecies and visions to telescope some events. The narrative loses some momentum in the last third when it becomes immersed in abbreviated grail legends, with short-cut cause-and-effect passages that sometimes read (albeit smoothly) like a synopsis. Attractive page design combines striking stylizations of dragons, banners, and motifs with realistic scenes in soft, grainy color. An appealing format that, combined with compact text, makes this useful for readers who want Arthur but who are intimidated by Pyle. --Ruth M. McConnell, San Antonio Pub . Lib . (c) Copyright 2010. This collection of King Arthur stories is told from Merlin's point of view after the collapse of Arthur's realm. Washed-out illustrations and a lackluster text fall short of the mark. From the great struggle between the red dragon and the white in the skies over Dinas Embrys to Sir Bedevere's lonely vigil as the ship departs for Avalon, Lister condenses the best-known episodes from the Arthurian canon into a dozen chapters (omitting ""Sir Gawain and the Green Knight"" and Tristram's story). Readers intimidated by Pyle's bulky retellings will find this handsomely laid-out volume more palatable; margins are spacious, type comfortably large, and illustrations colorful, if not particularly detailed. On the other hand, much of the dialogue falls flat (Lancelot to Guinevere: ""Be brave, my love, be brave. Everything will be all right, I promise. I'll come back soon, you'll see""). Baker's bright paintings are often dramatic but unimaginative (Merlin wears a conical cap and a purple robe with supposedly mystical symbols) and not always in agreement with the text (on page 42, Arthur's sword is supposed to be broken). This won't replace Riordan or Pyle, but might appeal to less-practiced readers. No notes, historical or literary. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
