Gr 5-9-A group of nine New Moon readers between the ages of 10 and 14 comprise the New Moon Books Girls Editorial Board that helped to create this fun-to-read, down-to-earth guide to writing and getting published. The slim volume contains interviews with female authors including Karen Cushman, Nikki Giovanni, and Madeleine L'Engle; ideas for getting started; tools of the trade; related activities such as paper making; and a good amount of instruction. The girls also share their personal experiences with the craft in "Point of View" sections that appear throughout. A comprehensive resource section includes a list of print and electronic magazines that publish young authors as well as suggested lists of fiction, nonfiction, and reference books related to writing for budding wordsmiths. Short, clear sections, a conversational tone, and a focus on the fun and benefits of the writing life make this book a solid choice.-Timothy Capehart, Leominster Public Library, MA (c) Copyright 2010.
