Although students choose a major or change majors based on a variety of criteria (e.g., interest in a class, influence of a teacher or professor), this guide will complement the process of deciding on a college major. It allows exploration of up to 151 baccalaureate-level college majors. The majors are grouped in 17 broad categories, each with a narrated overview. Individual entries are structured alike for easy comparison and contain information such as skills desired, other majors to consider, and related careers. An alphabetical list of majors, a related majors index, and a career index aid in browsing. An additional section provides 12 different narratives by students about choosing a major. The book is comparable to others, especially Richard A. Blumenthal and Joseph A. Despres's Major Decisions: A Guide to College Majors (2nd ed., 1992); libraries will need only one. Recommended for high school, college, and public libraries serving college-bound and undergraduate populations. B. Anderson; Northern Illinois University
