《儿童读物杂志》(Horn Book)书评
Photographs. At last, a biography of Potter specifically for children that is both accurate and entertaining. The author emphasizes Potter's childhood, yet also synthesizes a cohesive portrait of the remarkable author. However, more care went into the writing of the book than into its production. Kirkus评论
A handy if unimpressive biography in the publisher's ""Profiles"" series. Calling on several primary and secondary sources (including the recent biography by Judy Taylor), Buchan sketches Potter's life from her disappointing childhood through her triumphant old age as a happily married farmer, by then too contented to turn out more of the picture books beloved by so many generations. The author doesn't skimp on the sadder events, but doesn't concentrate on them, either. Useful are the many reproductions of Potter's work (and speculations about some of their human inspirations) but since the reproductions are in black-and-white, the true art can't shine through. Dodd's contributions, line drawings of Potter and family and friends, are workmanlike but not inspiring. The book concludes with a listing of the ""Peter Rabbit"" books and a summation of Potter's legacy. This was produced on the cheap, with crowded format and bound in paper over boards. Still, the information is accurate and put forth clearly. No index. British spellings and usage unchanged. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
