Bulla's addition to the new Stepping Stone series opens as Gregory's family moves to a smaller house in a poorer part of town; the father has lost his factory job. There is no yard at the new house in which to play, but Gregory explores a nearly burnt-out building that formerly was a chalk factory. Gregory finds plenty of chalk in the debris as he cleans up, and the artist in him soars. Even though the kids at the new school don't accept him readily, Gregory is happyfor him the blackened walls of the building become his giant canvas. Bulla has created a gem of a book, without a wasted word anywhere. He conveys the yearning and passion of a young artist and the healing power of friendship in a story that goes straight to the heart. Illustrations not seen by PW. Ages 7-9. In a poignant updating of the theme of Estes' Hundred Dresses, Gregory, a lonely boy who is ignored by his busy parents, who are preoccupied with their own struggle to survive, creates a garden drawn in chalk on the fire-blackened wall of the abandoned factory behind his home. His classmates, who come to taunt, are startled into recognition of his accomplishment when Ivy, who has won a school prize for art, declares that Gregory has surpassed her. A gentle story, gracefully told. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 2-3. ``It looked as if it had grown out of the sidewalk. There was no yard at all.'' Gregory's first impression of his new home is mixed until he realizes what he's finally gotten a room of his own. Happiness is short-lived though as usually out-of-work Uncle Max, with his red beard, guitar, and self-importance, moves in, ``sharing'' Gregory's room. The close quarters are an impetus to explore, and Gregory discovers a burned-out chalk factory behind the house. With the leftover walls, spider webs, and dust, Gregory finds a strange but peaceful haven. Just turned nine and savvy enough to enroll himself in school, Gregory is still vulnerable. He thinks his teacher likes him but, except for a girl named Ivy, he doesn't know about the others. Gregory and Ivy are kindred spirits in their love for art. When the other children plant real gardens Gregory uses the blackened brick walls as backdrop for a huge mural and speaks with pride of his ``garden.'' After his garden mural is discovered, Gregory first meets derision but finally gets the recognition he deserves. Bulla's finely honed skill and sensitive handling of themes of acceptance and acknowledgment of differences are evident but not obtrusive in this brief chapter book. PW.
