K-Gr 2-- Even though this sweet picture book seems, on first reading, to be devoid of complexity or any real action, a second, more thoughtful perusal uncovers unexpected charm. Little Mouse, a sociable yet independent sort, enjoys visiting with her friends Bear, Squirrel, and Porcupine, and shares different activities and interests with each. One day she devotes her time instead to painting on her own. When the picture is done, Little Mouse proudly shows it off; the animals see themselves in it. She is initially frustrated with their interpretations, insisting that the blueberry bush, flower, and sun do not bear resemblance to them. Later, however, when she hangs the picture, she realizes that their visions have some merit and she is pleased to have them nearby, in spirit and in pigment, if not in fact. Wolkstein's expressive, straight- forward narrative and Begin's beautiful, luminous watercolor and acrylic illustrations combine to produce an appealing, insightful look at friendship and creativity. The exquisite artwork; subtle characterization; and simple, thoughtful story add up to a satisfying whole. --Lisa Dennis, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (c) Copyright 2010. Wolkstein fans will be disappointed in this spindly outing. Little Mouse, accustomed to spending all of her time with Bear, Squirrel and Porcupine, decides to strike out on her own one day and take up painting. As each of her friends wander by and admire her work, they see themselves on the canvas, although Little Mouse indignantly insists that she has painted a landscape. Back home, she is surprised to find that from a distance some of the objects in her painting do resemble her friends. If this story is meant to serve as a lesson in perspective, it's a flimsy one. Even as a simple tale of friendship, the prose is slight to the point of being innocuous and certainly not worthy of a storyteller of Wolkstein's ( Oom Razoom ; The Banza ) considerable talent. Begin's color-saturated acrylics are masterfully executed: her lovingly detailed animal cast bristles with realism and the play of light and shadow is superb. The art veers toward the precious, however, and fails to infuse the story with gusto. Ages 4-up. (Apr.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

Meticulously detailed illustrations depict a mediocre story of a mouse who creates a painting in which her friends see themselves. From HORN BOOK 1992, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

A simple but carefully crafted story by a popular storyteller (The Magic Orange Tree, 1978) is brought to enchanting life in meticulous paintings by the illustrator of The Porcupine Mouse (1988). Little Mouse ventures forth each day to share nature's bounty and beauty with her friends: Bear, on whose visor she perches to pick berries; Squirrel, who loves flowers (to eat or to arrange); and Porcupine (``just look at that cloud''). When Little Mouse paints a picture of a berry bush, a flower, and the sun, she's distressed, at first, to have her friends see themselves in her painting rather than the images she intended; still, looking again, she sees that their perceptions are also valid and comes to enjoy the alternative possibilities. The appealing story delivers its message without insistence; the imaginative paintings, burgeoning with delightful detail, are exquisite. (Picture book. 4-8)

/*STARRED REVIEW*/ Ages 3-6. Little Mouse enjoys visiting with her friends, Porcupine, Bear, and Squirrel; but one day she decides upon a solitary activity--painting. She's quite pleased with her artwork, a picture of a blueberry bush, the sun, and a daisy. But her friends don't see it that way; in fact, what they see is themselves in the picture. At first Little Mouse disagrees, but as she studies the picture, she begins to like the interpretation that allows her to go beyond the obvious and see with a true painter's eye. Wolkstein offers a unique story with depth and nuance that is matched by Begin's attention-grabbing art. With almost photographic clarity, she creates an animal world that is richly detailed, down to the cobweb wall hanging in Mouse's bedroom and the blueberry juice droplets stuck in Bear's fur. The pictures' jeweled tones and impeccable draftsmanship make this artwork that sticks in the mind, while the tale will reside in the heart. (Reviewed Apr. 1, 1992)0688076092Ilene Cooper
