Tales from the Crypt: From Comic Books to Television is a one-hour television documentary about the controversy over horror comic books in the 1950's and the pop culture they inspired. The show profiles the story behind the famous and controversial EC horror comic books of the 1950's, and the writers and filmmakers they inspired, including George A. Romero, John Carpenter, and R.L. Stine. The 2-disc DVD release features an additional 3 hours of bonus material, including a never-before-seen roundtable discussion between EC Comics editor Al Feldstein and legendary author Ray Bradbury.

Gr 6 Up-In 1947, Bill Gaines became the head of Entertaining Comics and, along with editor Al Feldstein, turned it into one of the most influential publishers on the American scene. The feature of the title, Tales from the Crypt: From Comics to Television, is packed with the little known successes of EC right through the disasters caused by Dr. Frederic Wertham's book, Seduction of the Innocent, which laid the problems with American youth squarely on the comic book industry and resulted in Senate hearings and the establishment of the Comics Code Authority. That was the end of the EC horror titles. Later, several famous film directors who owed much to the EC legacy created the TV show, Tales from the Crypt, that gained new fans for the kind of storytelling that EC created. Luckily, early EC comics have been reprinted in hardbound editions. While its best known titles were in print, EC was a groundbreaking home for unique and original stories and art that led readers to deal with such social issues as racism and discrimination. In interviews with John Carpenter and George A. Romero, these directors discuss how reading EC books turned their creative interests to successful movie careers. And as good as the feature is, there are also many bonus features including a gem of an interview with an aging but still canny Ray Bradbury. The extras will please diehard fans as well as neophytes. With teen interest in the gothic, paranormal, and horror genres, this will provide a riveting background to the American cultural climate during the formative years of the comic book industry. Tales from the Crypt chronicles the story of the EC (Entertainment Comics) horror comics of the 1950s. Inspired by horror radio shows, Bill Gaines and editor Al Feldstein created a line of comics featuring the best artists and writers in the genre, including Ray Bradbury, and raised the level of comic book storytelling-and gore-to heights never seen before. A backlash against the violence resulted in a U.S. Senate hearing, and many comics publishers displayed self-censorship, which forced the EC line to fold. In the 1970s, bound collections of these comics came to the attention of film producer Joel Silver, who used them for the basis of his TV series Tales from the Crypt. This DVD shows how moviemakers such as John Carpenter and George Romero and writers R.L. Stine and Stephen King were directly inspired by the EC brand of horror. The DVD includes clips from feature films The Fog and Night of the Living Dead, along with interviews with Feldstein, Bradbury, and a number of the original artists.
