Bergquist's analysis of the cultures of the academy is exceptionally well executed; the text is very readable. His presentations of the collegial, managerial, and negotiating cultures are complete. A weak point in the analysis is the presentation on the developmental culture. This weakness does not rest with the author but is most clearly a direct result of the data. Another factor that makes this text must reading for the academic leadership is the presentation on organizational improvement. This latter section contains some good and useful information faculty and administrators can use in their daily lives for improving higher education. Those who are beginning careers in academic administration will find Bergquist's book to be an excellent travel atlas and perhaps a do-it-yourself dose of reality therapy.
