摘要
For today's teens, self-esteem is inextricably connected to body image. This series provides teens with crucial information about eating disorders, body image, and health. Its body-positive message will boost teens' self-esteem and help them learn to love their bodies.
Anorexia nervosa is a dangerous disorder in which a person refuses to maintain a minimal body weight, instead convinced that he or she is "fat." This book addresses the complex syndrome of anorexia nervosa -- its causes and effects, both physical and psychological. The author carefully guides teen readers toward seeking help.

Gr 6 Up-In a crowded field, this series entry stands out for its appealing format. The topic is introduced through personal anecdotes and a chapter on facts and myths associated with eating disorders. Stanley sets anorexia in context by devoting a chapter to related eating disorders. "Who Has Anorexia?" describes some famous victims of the disease and elucidates the characteristics of a typical patient, while "Why Anorexia Happens" explores many of the causes, personal and societal, that confound the problem. "Getting and Giving Help" offers pointers on how to tell if you or someone you know has anorexia, how to deal with parents and emotions, and where to go for professional help. The final section deals with factors related to prevention and provides hints for coping with various life events that may contribute to the onset of the disease. The brisk, readable text is broken up with attractive shaded insets and bulleted items. Don Nardo's Eating Disorders (Lucent, 1991) offers a broader perspective for this audience and has excellent graphics.-Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Unappealing covers will date these books quickly, and the design may make teens reluctant to select books so prominently identified as dealing with eating disorders. Some solid information is provided, but the dull writing style, overabundance of fictional accounts, and lack of illustrations are all drawbacks. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010.
