Gr 9 Up-- An exploration of a panorama of weight problems: obsession with its control, food addiction, dangers of obesity, aspects of dieting, the dangers of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and maintaining proper weight. The stated goal of the book is to help teenagers think more intelligently about their eating habits, to decide whether they have problems, and if so, to work toward solving them. Competent, matter-of-fact, no-nonsense writing will keep readers going through some of the material, which gets dense at times. Only the most dedicated student will stay with the entire book. No illustrations, charts, or photographs break up the text or add interest. This will most likely be useful for report writers, but has reliable information for those seeking materials on weight control. Sources at a slightly lower level include Arnold's Too Fat? Too Thin? (Morrow, 1984); Golbert's Fat Free (Macmillan, 1975; o.p.) and Epstein's Eating Habits and Disorders (Chelsea, 1990). --Lois McCulley, Wichita Falls High Sch . , TX (c) Copyright 2010. 'Worrying about weight is a far more widespread epidemic in America today than obesity itself,' say these prolific authors. But they also warn about the real dangers of being overweight, and at the same time they decry social prejudice against obese people. Easy to read and down to earth, the book is a clear delineation of a major American health problem. Bibliography, index. From HORN BOOK 1991, (c) Copyright 2010. Kirkus评论
In the authors' usual thorough style, an encyclopedic look at weight troubles. Most unusual here is the emphasis on neurobiology: understanding the body in terms of endorphins and neurotransmitters like serotonin; how set point theory brings us back to a particular weight; the role of an impaired body image. The usual diet strategies are rehearsed with originality: writing down what you eat is old hat; ""red-circles. . .around slip-ups"" is not. The up-to-date chapters on anorexia and bulimia should elicit healthy self-appraisal. The candor here is sure to be helpful. From viewing many weight-loss programs as ""glorified grocery stores"" to giving the lowdown on today's up-and-coming pills (e.g., Prozac), this has an air of authority that young people will respect, appreciate, and even, perhaps, heed.
