From Agatha Christie's Miss Marple to Sara Paretsky's V. I. Warshawski, this entertaining and informative study offers a ``survey of series characters created by women authors in crime and mystery fiction.'' The text is organized by subject, grouping kinds of characters together; in addition to such traditional categories as police (``Behind the Badge'') and private eyes, there are numerous, more quirky headings: ``The Blood Runs Blue'' (aristocratic sleuths); ``Portraits in Crime'' (characters with ties to the visual arts); ``Cure It or Kill It'' (medical mysteries), etc. Individual entries are devoted to specific heroes or heroines and include character sketches and recommendations of best books. An elaborate system of cross-references connects similar books and characters. Information on authors (including pseudonyms) is also provided for each entry. While the frightening speed with which several of these authors crank out work guarantees a measure of built-in obsolescence for a book of this kind, it is nevertheless an incredibly thorough reference source, certain to be highly used wherever mysteries are popular (which means in almost any public library). Multiple indexes. PLR.

This is a specialized catalog listing protagonists from mystery and crime fiction series written by women (although men with female pseudonyms or teams with a woman member are also included). It is a special catalog as well, for the researchers approach the project like the avid mystery readers they are. Categorizing the nearly 600 characters under academia, police, religious, artists, and other labels, they critique each character's personality and development through the series, demonstrating true familiarity with them all. This sense of reader giving reader information makes the book a valuable find for anyone who enjoys mystery and crime fiction. A worthwhile addition to the reference shelf. Martin J.
