Gr 5 Up-- Herda presents historical background, statistics, and charts as well as many little-known and interesting facts to support his rather gloomy outlook for each region. He is emphatic in his condemnation of industrial and personal greed as a causal factor in environmental disasters. The overall picture presented of a pristine and fragile land being systematically plundered since the first arrival of the white man is offset by valuable suggestions for action. Each volume contains a section entitled ``What We Can Do'' and offers many toll-free numbers and addresses where students (and their parents) may receive information regarding environmental issues. The full-color photographs and charts seem sometimes misplaced and haphazardly located, and the photographs are at times murky and do not equal the textual material. These books are pertinent for state reports--they encourage students to go beyond the state motto, flower, bird approach--as well as for research on the ecology of the United States. Valuable additions to most collections. --Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
