Second in a three-volume subseries that began with Nineteenth Century American Western Writers, ed. by Robert L. Gale (DLB 186, 1998), this work presents 32 biographies that include contemporary authors Rick Bass, Matt Braun, J. California Cooper, Gretel Ehrlich, Tess Gallagher, John Haines, Gerald Haslam, David Hwang, Maxine Hong Kingston, William Kittredge, Thomas McGuane, Sam Shepard, and Gary Snyder, and earlier writers Zane Grey, A.B. Guthrie, Robinson Jeffers, Jack London, O.E. Rolvaag, Mari Sandoz, John Steinbeck, and Frank Waters. The combination of familiar and less well known authors provides a balance of styles and subjects. Cracroft (Brigham Young Univ.) continues work he began with the first series, DLB 206 (CH, Dec'99). Scope of coverage and editorial selection criteria would be enhanced if each volume listed the contents for all three. Missing thus far are profiles for Edward Abbey, Richard Ford, Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, Russell Martin, John Nicols, and Leslie Marmon Silko. For full coverage, all three volumes will be needed. Highly recommended. N. Knipe; Colorado College
