《书目》(Booklist)书评
When Cook wrote A Saga of Texas, it was considered far too long for publication as a single novel. A portion of it was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post as "Comanche Captives" and later filmed (in 1961 as Two Rode Together, starring James Stewart and Richard Widmark). Now, 34 years after the author's death at age 42, the entire work, edited from Cook's original typescript, is being published in three volumes. Until Day Breaks is the first volume and takes its title from the gravestone of Comanche war chief Quanah Parker. The story is set in 1870 Texas, some six years before George Armstrong Custer went to his reward at Little Big Horn, and deals with one man's efforts to maintain a lasting peace between the white intruders and the Comanche, Kiowa, Cheyenne, and other tribes fighting for survival. Cook's well-rounded characters are believable, and his writing was clearly a notch above that of many of his contemporaries. This is a solid addition to Five Star's revival series. --Budd Arthur
