Gr 9 Up-In this investigation of aerial spying and the development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), narrator Wil Lyman discusses Cold War aerial spy technology. The value of the U-2 flights and the subsequent shooting down of Francis Garry Powers is examined as well as the role of U-2s in discovering Soviet missile buildup in Cuba. The progression from manned to unmanned vehicles and the increasing miniaturization of UAVs is illustrated. While not endangering human life, UAVs can withstand more G-force than a human body, are immune to radiation, and are unaffected by biohazards. UAV use in Vietnam, Bosnia, post-911, Desert Storm, and Afghanistan is shown. Satellite and high altitude spy technology is also discussed. The video also provides information about research on micro-UAVs the size of insects. Problems with UAVs as well as their potential for the future are examined. Video quality is crisp and clear. The use of military footage of UAVs enhances the production. A Web site with lesson plans, a transcript, and more is available at http://www.pbs.org. This informative and insightful production is interesting from military, historical, and scientific perspectives, and would be useful in secondary school and public libraries.--Mike Brown, Bowie High School, MD (c) Copyright 2010.
