Each of these brief books profiles the career of an individual with an unusual, challenging, and dangerous job. The writing is mundane, and sometimes the authors fail to provide enough explanation or information, but the books give readers a glimpse of what it's like to have a job that is anything but commonplace. The full-color photographs are often fuzzy. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Gr. 4^-7. This series is entitled Risky Business, and that's a moniker that's right on the mark. These two books look at people in very risky professions indeed. In Stunt Woman, readers meet Jan Davis, who jumps from airplanes, dives over waterfalls, and walks on the wings of airplanes, both professionally and for fun. The excellent color photographs of Davis skydiving or snorkeling capture her fearlessness, as does the text. Test Pilot introduces Major Rex Bailey of the U.S. Air Force. Although his job does not have the glamour of Davis', it is unquestionably a high-risk profession, and this comes through loud and clear. Report writers might find these accounts useful, but for both text and photos the biggest audience will be browsers. --Ilene Cooper
