Including the most up-to-date information, Adoption investigates the experience of women (many of them teenagers) who give up their babies: how and why people adopt children, why adopted people search for their birth parents; and how these parents react to such a search.

Gr 7 Up-- This modest-sized, clearly written revision of a 1981 title is excellent in presenting the concerns of adopted people who--however diverse their individual stories--have in common a double heritage from which they derive their identities. At the heart of the adoption stories are complicated emotions and crucial themes; DuPrau is evenhanded and sensitive in presenting these issues and in acknowledging that contemporary adoptees come from many races and nations. A third of the book is devoted to the dilemmas that invariably occur when adopted people want to meet their birth parents or in cases of open adoption, in which the birth mother knows the adoptive family and keeps some contact with her child. Included is a brief list of sources for pregnancy and adoption counseling, locating maternity homes, and contacting adoptee search organizations. The brief bibliography includes no recently published titles, and the incomplete citation of research discussed in the book is regrettable. In a revision of her 1981 text [BKL O 1 81], DuPrau concentrates once again on the conflicts and feelings related to adoption, rather than on statistics and how-to information. After some brief historical background and a look at different kinds of adoption procedures, she explores a variety of emotional, legal, and moral concerns as they affect both parents (mainly adoptive rather than birth parents) and children. While evidence of updating is apparent in her discussion of such matters as surrogate parenting, DuPrau's bibliography consists largely of pre-1981 books. Despite that, her treatment is still a frank, sensitive overview. Index. Gr. 7-12. --Stephanie Zvirin
