Naturalist-photographer Ryden, who has published three books on wild horses, here tackles the native wild coyote, recording her experiences over three years of tracking the fascinating predator through the seasons and its mating cycle. Ryden writes with warmth and concern. This vanishing species, now hunted and poisoned out of existence, is in many ways benign and a needed control over rabbits and mice. But the various lethal methods of killing coyotes are driving the beast into wary new survival patterns -- they are becoming hunters of livestock rather than eaters of carrion, rabbits and rodents. Most lively are the extensive chapters on the birth and training of successive litters of pups. Montana and Wyoming barren buttes and ranges underscore the hard life these dogs endure.
