摘要
In this engaging introduction to the red fox ( Vulpes vulpes ), J. David Henry recounts his years of field research on this flame-colored predator. With its catlike whiskers, teeth, and paws, as well as vertical-slit pupils, the North American red fox not only resembles but often behaves like a feline, especially when hunting. Probing the reasons for these similarities, Henry reveals the behavior and ecology of a species that thrives from the edge of suburbia to the cold northern tundra.

In this little book, Henry presents a fascinating account of the natural history of the red fox, based upon his field studies. Thoroughly discussed are behavior, breeding habits, and social organization. An in-depth discussion of the problems in reestablishing extirpated foxes is worthwhile reading for those interested in animal species rehabilitation. The role red foxes play in the spread of rabies is treated in great detail, as is the present status of rare and endangered fox species. How the red fox has adapted to human encroachment is one of the most interesting topics covered in the book. In addition to Henry's color photographs of red foxes taken in the wild, there are other photographs, tables, and charts. Extensive bibliography, current in the field of fox biology. A must-have book for anyone interested in the natural history of animals. General; upper-division undergraduates. P. C. Radich University of Indianapolis
