Fitness expert Darden here sorts 98 previously published articles (most of them installments of his fitness column in a Dallas newspaper) into large sections labeled "Eating," "Exercising," and "Perservering" to produce a quick-glance fitness manual. Diet tips include the admonishment to avoid quick-weight-loss plans and meal replacement drinks; Darden instead urges a low-fat, high-fiber regimen and drinking at least eight glasses of water a day (keep a sport bottle handy and sip from it throughout the day, he suggests), reading food labels, avoiding mayonnaise-laced fast foods, and limiting salad bar items to those you can handle with tongs. Darden's upbeat, supportive tone and realistic ideas and suggestions seem on target for persons trying to gain control of their eating and fitness habits. ~--Sue-Ellen Beauregard
