《学校图书馆杂志》(School Library Journal)书评
Gr 9 UpThis book encourages critical thinking by presenting many different aspects of a single issue. Many opinions, originating from prominent experts, spokesmen, and those with personal experiences to share, are included. The articles are largely reprinted from general and specialized periodicals. Among the specific issues addressed are the benefits and risks of meat and milk consumption, vitamins, exercise, weight-loss treatments, and various alternative therapies. A discussion of the health-care industry completes the book. Each article is preceded by the author's credentials, a synopsis of the opinion expressed, and several questions to consider while reading. Extensive bibliographies of periodicals and books are appended, as are questions for further discussion. The authors express their views, whether popular or not, clearly and provocatively. No easy answers will result from perusing these pages, but readers' thinking will be challenged and stimulated. Some other titles that explore the issues raised here include Anne M. Fletcher's Thin for Life (Chapters, 1995) and The Complete Home Health Adviser (Woodland, 1994).Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS (c) Copyright 2010.
