PreS-Flo's dog Ebb has a special spot in the bow of their small boat. One day, Bird flaps in and takes his spot. The pup is angry, but Flo is delighted. Everyone thinks Bird is just lovely. As Ebb's feathered companion follows him around and gets more and more attention, the jealous canine wishes it would fly away forever. As soon as he gets his wish, though, he begins to miss Bird and mopes about until her return. Although the writing is pedestrian and the story somewhat flimsy, children will be charmed by the illustrations of Ebb and the meddlesome Bird. Watery washes of color cover each page, evoking maritime surroundings. The dog's exaggerated features and Bird's silly expressions are endearing. Although there are better stories on this familiar theme, these pictures are too good to miss. The large, appealing illustrations and simple text make the book effective for storytime sharing.-Carolyn Stacey, Jefferson County Public Library, Golden, CO (c) Copyright 2010. Simmons (Come Along, Daisy; Daisy and the Egg) here applies her soft-hued, luminous paintings to the subject of jealousy. Ebb, a small dog, sits "in her favorite spot" in the bow of the girl Flo's boat as Flo's mother rows or tows it through the fens. One day, however, the pooch finds herself joined by Bird, who thereafter seems not only to take over Ebb's special place in the boat but also to push Ebb aside in the affections of Flo and her family. Even Granny plays favorites, giving Bird tidbits that once would have been Ebb's. When Bird disappears as suddenly as she had come, Ebb thinks her secret wish has been grantedÄuntil she finds herself missing Bird and, in the end, she is grateful for her return. The expressive and winsome animal friends convey a range of emotionsÄdismay, envy, loneliness and contentmentÄin their postures alone. And, as in the Daisy books, the vibrant visuals create a tangible sense of a private, intimate world among the rivers and reeds. However, the human charactersÄSimmons's firstÄare less compelling and memorable. Though the plot may be familiar, the tale is sweet and childlike, and older siblings especially will identify with Ebb's plight. Ages 3-7. (Sept.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

Flo's dog, Ebb, has no interest in newcomer Bird, who has usurped her favorite spot in the boat and gets in the way when Ebb tries to eat or sleep. But when Bird flies away, Ebb realizes how lonely she is. And when Bird finally returns one day, Ebb feels things couldn't have been better. The story isn't original, but the impressionistic illustrations and simple text imbue the characters with personality and charm. From HORN BOOK Spring 2000, (c) Copyright 2010. The sweet pun of the title is reflected in this understated but engaging tale from Simmons (Daisy and the Egg, p. 229, etc.). Ebb, Flo's dog, loves to sit in her favorite spot in the family fishing boat, until one day a goose nudges him aside. The friendly bird attracts all sorts of attention, even treats from Granny that used to go to Ebb. Ebb wishes the bird would fly away and not come back, but when that happens, Ebb discovers that he misses sharing his favorite spot, and doesn't sleep well alone anymore. So the long summer goes on, and Ebb and Flo miss Bird mightily, but Bird does return, and a refrain begun on the first page, ``things couldn't have been better,'' reappears, definitively, on the last. The simple text floats on full-page illustrations that capture Flo and her mother's houseboat and the luminescence of the water. Edges are soft, the figures have button features, and Ebb and Bird are invested with rich personalities. (Picture book. 3-8)

Ages 3^-6. Following her two charming picture books about Daisy the duckling, Simmons now introduces an equally endearing character--a goose, named simply Bird--who takes her place alongside the two title characters, Flo, a little girl, and a dog Ebb. Ebb is definitely not pleased when Bird makes herself at home in all of Ebb's favorite spots, but much like her literary predecessor, Marjorie Flack's dog, Angus, she comes to miss the interloper when Bird disappears. Of course, there's a great reunion when Bird is found. Simmons sets much of this book on the water, using warm greens, reds, and yellows painted with soft brush strokes for a gentle, sun-drenched effect. The story may have been told many times in children's books, but this version's lush pictures and simple telling make it an excellent choice for story time. --Susan Dove Lempke
