Bagley's editing and prose contribution to Abner Blackburn's journal is an excellent example of historical research and interpretation. The work represents very positive scholarship, craftsmanship, and comprehensibility. It could well serve as a text example in any historical research class, undergraduate as well as graduate level. This does not imply that the book is above the general reader. Rather, it is a readable work, suitable for all with an interest in the American West. It contains front maps, showing Blackburn's sojourn, photos of the Blackburn family and relatives, a full index, and an outstanding bibliographic essay. Bagley has used a novel style in examining Blackburn's narrative, which, at first, gives the impression of undue repetition. As one becomes involved in the text, however, one will find it is anything except dull and repetitious. General; undergraduate; graduate; research. W. T. Eagan; University of Southern Colorado

This is a superbly edited account of a pioneer's adventures during his seven trips across the Great Plains between 1843 and 1851 and his experiences in the early Mormon Church and the Mexican War. Bagley has taken Blackburn's diary covering the 21-year period from 1830 to 1851, divided it into ten chapters, and given each a substantial introduction. His preface, afterword, epilog, appendixes, and extensive bibliography combine with the historical document to make this a very credible work. Punctuation and spelling have been improved for the sake of clarity, but the original flavor of this simple, honest pioneer's account has been maintained. In an 1894 letter to his niece, Blackburn remarks that he is ``awaiting to find some suitable scholar to assist me with the preparing it in shape.'' His wait may seem overly long, but he would have been pleased with the results.-- Dorothy Lilly, Grosse Pointe North H.S. Lib., Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. (c) Copyright 2010.
