This superb volume comprises 26 chapters divided into four major sections: perception and cognition; social, emotional, and communicative development; risk factors in development; and contexts and social policy. Each section provides a summary of current empirical research and highlights theoretical frameworks to explain the findings gleaned from ongoing research. Each contributor is a leader in the specific field discussed. A major underlying theme throughout the book is the concept of dynamic system; development of neurological, physiological, and cognitive abilities occurs along complex pathways and is a consequence of multiple interactive influences, culminating in a predetermined mature level of functioning or fully developed organ. Though the content is technical in places, the chapters are highly readable; the editing is impressive, especially since the enterprise has an international perspective with contributors from major universities around the world.
