摘要
NURSING: CONCEPTS OF PRACTICE presents a thorough description of the development of the self-care deficit nursing theory and illustrates its relevance to nursing practice with a common sense approach. The text presents the foundations of nursing as a field of knowledge and practice and provides an approach to "knowing and thinking nursing," which forms the basis and organizing framework for nursing actions in all types of practice situations. Thoroughly revised and updated, it contains five new chapters and three revised chapters, expanding upon the importance of nursing practice models and the stages of development within the models.

This is the sixth edition of a book that, according to the author, continues the development and organization of the features she considers essential to nursing as a field of knowledge and practice. The purpose is to "give direction, meaning and structure to nursing practice, as well as to emerging theoretic nursing sciences." These are worthy objectives and admirably met. Although not indicated, the book is written at a level that undergraduate, graduate, and practicing nurses can appreciate. The author is a totally credible authority on the subject of self-care deficit theory in particular and on nursing practice, both theoretical and practical. Six themes form the basis for the content. The first theme is the reason why persons need and can be helped through nursing. The second is the relationship between nurses and those for whom they care. The third theme is the unitary nature of human beings, and the fourth is that of deliberate action. The final themes are those of methods by which nurses help those in need and nursing as a practical science. The unique features of the text are the author's practical and theoretical ideas about nursing. This is a classic text. Self-care deficit theory is known not only in nursing, but also in many other disciplines. The author has continued to build upon her concept of self-care for many years and this is an excellent summary of her current theory and beliefs about nursing, both theoretical and practical. I would highly recommend it for students (undergraduate and graduate) and practicing nurses. It eloquently analyzes the essence of nursing.
