This fascinating book is packed with a great amount of information and detail for everyone interested in herbs for culinary, medicinal, and cosmetic uses. Bown includes a section on designing the formal and informal herb garden and a discussion of wild herbs around the world, with a listing of the major herbs of the various continents and geographic regions. One of the two main sections is an herb catalog, in which genera and important species are described and pictured. Symbols are used to show which parts of the plants are used and for what purpose. A large portion of the book is an herb dictionary, in which each species is discussed in detail regarding its culinary and medicinal uses. The book closes with a chapter on cultivating, harvesting, and storing herbs; a glossary; a short bibliography; and a list of herb gardens to visit. Well illustrated with numerous colored photographs of plants, gardens, and other details. General. C. T. Mason Jr.; emeritus, University of Arizona

Bown, author of the award-winning Alba: the Book of White Flowers (Timber Pr., 1989), focuses her current work on herbs, the vast group of plants valued for "flavor, fragrance, medicinal and healthful qualities, economic and industrial uses, pesticidal properties, and coloring materials (dyes)." This comprehensive volume covers over 1000 herbs from the expected rosemary, basil, and thyme (each of which is illustrated by more than 12 different varieties) to less traditional herbal plants such as the walnut and water lily. The book is divided into two major sections: a catalog of color photographs, accompanied by botanical descriptions, hardiness, and use information for each herb; an herb dictionary, which provides historical background and cultural instructions for each species. Significant chapters are devoted to herb garden design and herbs in the wild according to geographic regions. Further flavoring this authoritative work are useful glossaries and timelines. This excellent book is far more comprehensive than the only similar title, Lesley Bremness's Herbs (1994) from the same publisher. Highly recommended.Virginia A.
