This is a nicely-illustrated overview of ophthalmology that mirrors the excellent text by the same name. It is available in DOS 3.1, Windows 3.1 and higher, and Macintosh System 7 and higher formats. The atlas requires two CD-ROMs and provides easy-to-use methods for searching, bookmarking, and storing text and images. The main purpose is convenience of presentation. The discs are lightweight and portable. With the wide availability of PCs, information in the atlas can be rapidly reviewed in a busy clinic or in the library for study. The search engine allows quick access to the numerous ophthalmic concepts and images merely by typing a word. This is a worthy addition to the atlas. The atlas is aimed at general audiences. While residents will likely derive the most benefit from the explanations and accompanying figures and drawings, seasoned practitioners will undoubtedly enjoy the review and marvel at the beauty of the color photos. The text is authored by a venerable cast of o phthalmic luminaries, all experts in their fields. The CD-ROM's greatest strength lies in the search engine. The hypertext links are easy to use and relatively self-explanatory. The "pop-up" references, which show the bibliography corresponding to the text in a separate window, is another nice feature that improves efficiency. Overall, the product ran quickly on an AMD-6 233 MHz processor with 96 MB RAM. The ability to save and copy figures is an excellent feature. Unfortunately, figures are presented as "thumbnail" images, so their detail is not particularly discernable without opening the figure. The text and figures can both be viewed simultaneously by using the vertical split, but the results are unsatisfactory without a very large monitor. In addition, the digitized images, although of high quality, do not approximate the near perfect quality of the written text, especially for structures that are somewhat difficult to photograph such as filtering blebs (Section 4, Chapter 34, Figure 11). The division of the product onto two compact discs requires that discs be switched to view some of the figures. For example, the oculoplastics images require switching Disc One for Two. Some difficulties were encountered when trying to switch back, and at one point the computer crashed. Overall, however, the CD-ROM is a nice addition to the atlas.
