This is the 20th edition of a text that provides a brief, up-to-date presentation of medical microbiology, with emphasis on subjects pertinent to clinical infection and chemotherapy. The purpose is to provide a ^^brief, accurate and up-to-date presentation of those aspects of medical microbiology which are of particular significance in the fields of clinical infections and chemotherapy.^^ This type of brief, overview text is needed for medical students to review and study the field of medical microbiology. The book has met the author's purpose very well. This book is written primarily for medical students and residents. For teachers and researchers in medical microbiology, coverage of most topics would be too superficial. The authors of this text are well qualified and respected microbiologists. The text has an attractive overall appearance while keeping the cost reasonable. The references are mostly review articles and are current and pertinent. A unique feature is the use of the ins ide front and back covers of the book to list medically important microorganisms. This is probably helpful as a study guide for medical students. The illustrations are of high quality and are effectively used to convey information. My overall assessment of this text is high. It provides a good overview of medical microbiology in a fairly brief format. It is a useful text for medical students to review various aspects of medical microbiology. For a particular area of medical microbiology, this text could provide a good introduction to be followed by more comprehensive texts on the subject. Medical school bookstores should carry it. L.
