摘要
This reference work aims to help students contact US organizations or individuals who can provide the information they need to write papers, prepare speeches, or investigate career opportunities. Covered are a wide variety of topics - from child abuse and homelessness to economics, environmental preservation, and literature. The guide takes a balanced approach to research, including organizations that have pro and con viewpoints on topics like abortion or gun control.

The editors of this work pulled information from other Gale publications (Encyclopedia of Associations, Research Centers Directory, etc.) to produce a directory of more than 800 organizations that provide free or inexpensive (under $25) information. All of the listed government agencies, information clearinghouses, research centers, and nonprofit organizations responded to a prepublication survey, so students' information requests should be honored. The book was developed with the assistance of an advisory board in order to match the content to the curricula and popular interests of students from junior high through the junior college level. Approximately 150 topics are grouped in 10 broad subject chapters, such as "Careers and Work," "Arts and Entertainment," and "Science and Environment." Each chapter opens with a list of the specific subjects covered, references to related topics found elsewhere in the book, and suggestions for research projects. For instance, "Government and Public Affairs" covers 25 topics ranging from Censorship and Elections to Gun Control and Rape. Sample research questions are provided for the listed subjects, for example, "Prison reform--are more cells the answer?" The chapters are divided into two major sections: the first provides information about organizations, and the second lists directories of people. Each of the 800 organizational entries consists of a brief description and area(s) of expertise, free informational items, information available for a fee (and the price), and complete addresses and telephone and fax numbers. The lists of pertinent biographical directories are included so that students can identify experts in various fields. More than 200 current sources (who's whos, membership lists, etc.) are those readily available in most reference collections and were selected from Gale's Directories in Print. Each entry includes title, publisher, frequency, and a brief annotation of content. A special section, "How to Contact Organizations and People," provides information-gathering tips, sample contact letters, and a script for a telephone interview. The book's complete index will be helpful to students who have identified research topics. The broad subject-chapter format also lends itself to browsing, although "Beliefs, Cults, and Sects" lumps together such diverse organizations as the Federation of Islamic Associations and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese with Haunt Hunters and the MENSA Pagan/Occult/Witchcraft Special Interest Group. Many libraries will already own the basic sources that provide the directory information available in this title. While not an essential purchase, Student Contact Book will be useful for beginning researchers in identifying topics and tracking down additional low-cost resources. (Reviewed May 15, 1993)

A compact and relatively inexpensive book that supplies a wealth of information on more than 800 organizations and 200 who's whos, professional rosters, and directories. The addresses, sources, and tips on how to contact organizations and people will connect students and the general public with experts on current issues and hot topics in today's society. The list of topics covered plus the alphabetical and subject index provide easy access to information ranging from abortion to witchcraft. Compiled by using other respected Gale publications and with the help of an advisory board of teachers, students, and librarians, this invaluable book helps one avoid a tedious, time-consuming search through a multitude of reference sources and focus on a topic. To ensure that this book receives maximum use, it should be in the ready-reference collection of all libraries serving students from junior high school to post-secondary education. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries. D. J. Turner; Auraria Library
