The fifth edition (fourth edition, 1992) has been revised and updated to reflect developments in laboratory and diagnostic testing resulting from advances in technology. Also reflected are changes in population needs such as increases in the incidence of cancer, AIDS, and virulent infectious diseases. Tests include background material and explanation, factors that contribute to false test results, procedure for specimen collection, clinical implications of abnormal findings and disease patterns, patient preparation, patient aftercare, and clinical alerts. The purpose is to promote the delivery of safe, effective, and informed care for patients undergoing diagnostic tests and procedures. This is accomplished by providing necessary and required information for quality care planning, individualized patient assessment, analysis of patient needs, appropriate interventions, patient education, and timely evaluation of patient outcomes. The contributions of authors from a variety of healthc are backgrounds make it a useful resource for healthcare professionals and students of many specialties in the healthcare field. The size and the organization of the text make it a useful resource in the clinical setting. The chapters are written in outline format. A detailed table of contents in the beginning of each chapter make it easy to quickly find information. Clinical alerts for each test are highlighted in a gray box for emphasis.
