摘要
This book clearly outlines the various disorders, and explores the warning signs of their onset, as well as how they are diagnosed and treated. It also helps clarify who is at risk and suggests why this may be so. Eating disorders are a serious manifestation of the real pressures that young people feel every day. The good news is that with knowledge, awareness, and treatment appropriate to each young person, a healthy relationship with food, and a healthy way of life, can be reclaimed. Book jacket.

Readers will be drawn to case histories of seven eating-disordered individuals--male and female, teen and adult--illuminating chapters on symptoms, causes, treatments, effects on family and friends, and struggle to overcome anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive eating. Black-and-white photos are unimaginative but add a visual component to this clearly written book about a subject particularly important to teens. A list of resources is included. Bib., glos., ind. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Gr. 6^-10. The case histories of seven teens struggling with anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating give this straightforward study personal punch. Explaining that "the danger of eating disorders begins when people and everyday activities take second place to dieting or when a teen feels that food is the only thing that makes her happy," Yancey points out the symptoms, underlying causes, and triggers of each condition. Both in-patient and out-patient recovery programs are described, and the roles of parents and friends are examined. Yancey also urges teens to seek professional help for themselves or others trapped in these behaviors. A useful glossary and suggestions for further readings help make this well-organized book an excellent resource for both class projects and troubled teens. --Candace Smith
