摘要
From the American Indian sun dance to the Zulu marriage dance, from the ballets of Ballanchine to the disco craze--dance is a part of almost every culture of the world. As ritual, as celebration, and as art, dance is both exotic and traditional, primitive and modern. This stunning exploration of this most visual of art forms is brimming over with richly detailed sets and costumes and photos of memorable performers and their techniques. A 75th Eyewitness volume with truly universal appeal.

Gr 4-7-An introduction to every aspect of this art form. Beginning with a mention of the forms of dance, Grau looks at many different cultures and describes how some older traditions are kept alive today. Court dancers from Java, Native American dancers, African dancers accompanied by drummers, and couples dancing the Charleston are all represented. The author also explores various aspects of the art, from makeup and costumes to choreography and musical accompaniment. In typical "Eyewitness" style, the pages come to life with colorful and eye-catching photographs of figures in all manner of native costume and dress. While the textual information is not extensive, the book gives readers a peek into this often exotic world.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH (c) Copyright 2010. Covering many kinds of dance from different cultures, this book discusses training, costuming and makeup, staging, choreography, traditions, and a variety of musical accompaniments. The busy design includes plenty of colorful photos, but the text is a superficial smattering of information. Nevertheless, this volume may whet a reader's appetite for more. Ind.
