Accurately titled, this book provides a very good basis in nursing concepts, the nursing process, clinical nursing therapies, and clinical care, and it begins with a section on how to use it. Each chapter lists objectives, includes critical/communication thinking applications (highlighted in red boxes), illustrations, PICO/evidence-based practice (in blue boxes), applicable NANDA diagnoses in tables, and a few NCLEX review type questions. The chapters are divided into four sections on conceptual foundations (theories, culture, values, safety, trends), nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation), clinical nursing therapies (medication administration, vitals, infection control), and clinical nursing care (hygiene, mobility, nutrition, physical, sexual and psychological well being, pain management, and more). It includes a vast array of online resources for both students (review questions, articles, demonstration videos, tutorials, breath and heart sounds audios) and instructors (test questions, PowerPoints, syllabus). However, even though there is a statement that the ebook is fully available online, when I entered my activation code, I was only able to preview the first 75 pages with an offer to purchase the rest. The purpose is to teach the basics of nursing, to provide clinical context with input from professional nurses, and to help students achieve mastery of critical healthcare knowledge and an understanding of how successful nurses think and act -- worthy objectives for nursing students. The print book is very good and the online resources include a lot of additional information that supports the learning objectives for each section. Because there are visual, audio, and printed resources, this title meets the needs of students with different learning styles. Although this book is aimed at beginning nursing students, it could be valuable to more advanced students and practicing nurses as well. There are three main authors and numerous well credentialed contributors from various nursing backgrounds, providing a well-rounded view of nursing. The book is well organized and covers a lot of material. The nutrition chapter, for example, covers basics of nutrients and factors that affect feeding, tube feeding, problems with feeding, age-specific needs among other topics. Overall, it covers the topic well but there are some gaps. I would have liked to see more about common diets that patients may be on for medical reasons (DASH diet for hypertension, renal diets, etc.) and for personal reasons (vegetarian/vegan). In the discussion of sources of protein, animal-based proteins are presented as the only complete proteins, ignoring vegetable sources like quinoa and tofu/soy, which are important to many people today. The authors point out where solid updates have been made to the eighth edition. In addition, the organization of this edition is improved. Beth A. Ammerman, DNP, MSN, BSN(Linden Family Medicine).
