摘要
"Throughout the history of opera, if not quite continuously, there have been some who have taken opera's dramatic potential seriously and others who have not. It seems to be the case that over the last thirty years Opera as Drama has helped keep the serious position alive. I hope it will continue to do so in this new edition."-- From the foreword to the new edition
Passionate, witty, brilliant, Opera as Drama , although published over thirty years ago, remains one of the most controversial, thought-provoking, and entertaining works of operatic criticism ever written. For this new edition, the first since the book's original publication, the author has prepared a new foreword and provided emendations and additions that take into account some of the critical reaction to the book. He has also added a new chapter on operatic criticism. Updated yet still retaining the verve of the original, this new edition will be indispensable reading for all students and lovers of opera.

The years since this book first appeared in 1956 have not made the critical views of Joseph Kerman any less telling or his opinions less challenging. He continues to prove that "an opera critic has to be sensitive first and foremost to music." The revisions in this edition include an extended preface, the addition of a critique of Mozart's Idomeneo, extensive revision of what was previously the last chapter, and the addition of an epilogue on operatic criticism. In the now-penultimate chapter, Kerman's provocative views of Puccini and Strauss remain unchanged (Tosca is still "that shabby little shocker"), but the extensive comments, of a similar nature, about Gian Carlo Menotti are omitted. Curiously enough, in the years between editions no opera seems to have appeared to challenge the author's critical faculties, even though he assessed Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress barely a half-decade after its premiere. The availability, again, of this seminal book is welcome; it is a must for all public and academic libraries. R. Stahura Ripon College

By and large, the new edition of Opera as Drama retains the spirit and format of the original ( LJ 11/1/56). However, in an effort to generalize the methodology used throughout the work, Kerman has added an interesting section outlining a viable method of opera criticism. In addition, he has modified the chapter devoted to Mozart to include a penetrating discussion of Idomeneo. The thoughtful withdrawal of somewhat callow remarks on various composers, operas, etc., will also be regarded as a welcome revision by many readers. Alterations notwithstanding, Kerman's study remains one of the most captivating books on opera to date. Highly recommended. William J. Waters, Pensacola Junior Coll., Fla. (c) Copyright 2010.
