K-Gr 2-- Both of these attractive books focus on a single aspect of animal behavior. Eye-catching, full-color photographs illustrate the concepts described in the text. Animal Fighting demonstrates, through words and pictures, how animals often must fight for space in order to find food for themselves and their families. The behaviors of hamsters, mice, crabs, birds, deer, antelope, giraffes, beetles, cats, and dogs are all illustrated and described. Special signs and displays used by animals to mark their territory are also mentioned. Animals Learning explains the difference between instinctive and learned behavior. Many examples of learned behavior are presented, including a wonderful sequence of photos depicting a cat's first distasteful encounter with a harmless looking toad. The Rainbow Nature Encyclopedia (Rand McNally, 1982) contains brief sections on both of these topics, but is intended for older readers. --Barbara B.
