Gr 2-5 Cole and Degen have struck at the core once again to produce an exciting, attractive, and informative science book for young readers. Children who entered Ms. Frizzle's classroom in The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks (Scholastic, 1986), are in for another exhuberant, intriguing field trip. This time, it's to the center of the earth. Surprises abound through each strata down to the very inner core where it is hot, hot, hot. The class collects rock samples before the bus is expelled from the earth's core in a volcanic eruption. Illustrations are in watercolor cartoon format and attendant ``balloons'' contain pertinent information or students' humorous asides. There are also pages from students' reports on rocks. A tongue-in-cheek section at the end discusses the real and fantasy aspects of the book. Containing uncluttered text and illustrations, it is an anticipatory page-turner full of exciting adventure from school yard to volcano and back. In a companion to the same team's imaginative The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks, Ms. Frizzle conducts her class on a fact-finding mission into caves, down toward the earth's center, and to an erupting volcano. There's so much going on in these pages--mini-characterizations, reports, vocabulary, hilarious byplay--that the facts may be submerged by the fun; but for those levelheaded enough to assimilate it amid the hilarity, there's a good dose of basic geology here. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Ages 5-9. Ms. Fizzle, star of The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks (Booklist 83:507 N 15 86), the wackiest, wisest teacher in picture books this side of Miss Nelson, returns to teach geology via a field trip through the center of the earth. As her class learns about fossils, rocks, and volcanoes, so will readers, absorbing information painlessly as they vicariously travel through the caves, tunnels, and up through the cone of a volcanic island shortly before it erupts. Soon lava hits the ocean, the magic school bus rises in a cloud of steam, and the class returns to school, where types of rocks observed on the trip are labeled on buildings, walkways, fertilizer, and statuary, bringing the children's newfound knowledge into practical focus. In an amusing afterword, the author and artist separate fact from fantasy for their more literal-minded readers. Degen's bright, colorful artwork includes many witty details to delight observant children. Carried in cartoonlike balloons, the schoolmates' thoughts, banter, and asides add spice to the geology lesson. Bright, sassy, and savvy, the magic school bus books rate high in child appeal.
