This beautifully photographed documentary compares the myth of Gen. George Armstrong Custer with the reality of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. History class taught most of us that Custer and his Seventh Cavalry valiantly fought off the savage Indians so that Americans could freely roam the land, making the most of the abundant natural resources. This vision was reinforced by the legendary theater of Buffalo Bill Cody and countless Hollywood films. While no one from Custer's troops lived to tell of the battle, countless Native Americans have passed down their memories to their families. Stories, songs, and artwork recount a Native American history that contrasts sharply with the Custer legend. Grandchildren of Native Americans who fought Custer share their legacy, filling a void in a biased history. Although this edition of The American Experience was broadcast in 1992, this Emmy Award-winning production and its stories are timeless and easily appreciated by young and old alike.-Debbie Rzepczynski, Lake Cty.
