Using an innovative blend of hula and aerobics, Hula Workout for Beginners and Weight Loss focus on the fitness benefits of Hawaiian dance. Combining the familiar fluid arm and swaying hip movements of hula with contemporary cardio steps, both tapes are designed to tone and strengthen the body. In For Beginners, fitness instructor and choreographer Kili introduces viewers to the seven basic hula steps, including the ka'o, hela, and kaweli. After a demonstration of the "hula rock dance," Kili breaks down the steps, offering variations using hula arm movements and graceful bumps to tell the story. Weight Loss repeats the introduction to the seven basic steps but emphasizes leg movements to increase heart rate. Both programs have organized and easy-to-follow instructional segments with a closing dance that includes all the steps. For those wishing to learn authentic Hawaiian hula dance, these programs will not fill the bill. Although effective, they will tweak the interest of people searching for something different but not for the long term. Recommended for libraries wishing to add something unique to their fitness collection or with a large senior population.-Kathy Wicks, Urbana Free Lib., IL (c) Copyright 2010.
