Critique du Library Journal
Adobe Photoshop (see Computer Media, LJ 4/1/04, LJ 8/04) is as popular as ever; expect demand for titles on the newest version, CS2. Up to Speed acts as a nice guide for existing users who need to become conversant with new capabilities--or find where older features may have moved. Chapter overviews and full-color demonstrations help readers catch up quickly; frank opinions and clear prose make this a winner for all libraries. Camera Raw and Digital Photographers both target digital photographers, but Camera Raw focuses on shooting and using raw digital images with CS2, the Camera Raw plugin, and Bridge. Serious photographers will appreciate the thoroughness of Raw; it is overkill for hobbyists who let the camera do much of the work. A clear style, full-color examples, and attention to detail recommend this to larger libraries. Digital Photographers is informal bordering on cutesy, but it packs in a lot of useful information. Step-by-step instructions, large, full-color screen shots, and coverage of real-world problems give readers the background they need to use Photoshop effectively; for all libraries. Those libraries needing beginner's guides should look to Classroom in a Book and Visual QuickStart, which address both digital photographers and graphic designers. Classroom in a Book's CD includes lesson files associated with the print exercises, as well as excerpts from Adobe training DVDs (which serve to advertise other titles but still offer useful tips). Each chapter is a self-contained session, beginning with an overview, walking step by step through common tasks, and ending with review Q&As. A solid full-color basic guide; for all libraries. Visual QuickStart nicely indicates new or changed features in CS2 with check marks in the table of contents and "NEW" symbols in the text. While illustrations are grayscale, a full-color insert showcases the work of several Photoshop artists. A step-by-step, clear, and thorough beginner's guide for all libraries. If you can buy only one, go for the colorful Classroom in a Book. Also full color, Demand highlights fresh features and offers a new features guide as an appendix. See also references highlight related information, sidebars add extra detail, content is related to specific exam objectives where pertinent, and step-by-step illustrated instructions aid in completing projects. Real-world projects and downloadable files aid in hands-on learning. A good beginning-to-intermediate guide; for all libraries, especially those serving exam takers. (c) Copyright 2010.
