Library Journal Review
This miniseries is based on R.F. Delderfield's classic novel about David Powlett-Jones, a young Welshman and soldier who returns from World War I to become a schoolmaster at an elite boys boarding school and eventually becomes the school's headmaster. The series is in 13 segments on five videocassettes or four DVDs. As with all BBC programs, the photography is beautiful. The lush green countryside makes an exquisite backdrop to the story. The original music, specifically composed for this program, includes a beautiful piano theme. The technical qualities of the program, including sound, photography, and scenery, enhance the wonderful portrayals by all of the actors. The series is a joy to watch; highly recommended for all general audiences and especially those interested in British history between the wars.-Susan Clayton, Univ. of Redlands Lib., CA (c) Copyright 2010.
