Resumen
Resumen
Research into abilities is one of the great success stories of psychology. Ability tests are widely used and there is continued interest in the origins of abilites (enes or environment?) and their links to social phenomena such as crime and welfare dependecy. Intelligence and Abilities explains what is known about the processes associated with mental abilities and the relationship of abilities to behaviour. It also provides a clear and up-to-date guide to the main areas of research.

Cooper (Queen's Univ., Belfast) discusses the nature of intellectual or cognitive abilities, the underlying mechanisms that might give rise to individual differences, and how these abilities relate to real life behavior. He deftly covers the traditional structural approach of Charles Spearman's g and L.L. Thurstone's primary mental abilities, which are commonly categorized as factorial models. He also devotes a chapter to the alternative viewpoints-- Robert Sternberg's triarchic theory, Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, and Michael Howe's less known strict behavioral viewpoint, which rejects theories that attempt to explain the "black box" between stimulus and response. Cooper documents the robust genetic influence on cognitive functioning, summarizing various correlational studies on kinship relationships and adopted children that include longitudinal studies showing the changing role of environment and genetics from childhood to early adulthood. He looks at various factors in the biological matrix that might be related to individual differences in cognitive abilities: speed of processing, reaction time, inspection time, EEG, and glucose metabolism. Cooper concludes with an exploration of the political implications of individual differences in cognitive abilities. A well-researched book with glossary and 12 pages of references, many of them current. Useful for undergraduates through faculty. P. Barker; Schenectady County Community College
