A welcome complement to The Computer in Composition Instruction: A Writer's Tool, ed. by William Wresch (1984). The essays in the present volume should be required reading for composition instructors and writing program directors in educational institutions (middle school through college) about to choose or already using word processors. First, it contains 13 informative essays, written by experienced composition/language teachers of various levels who have been in the composition trenches and have found word processing a helpful weapon in their battle against ineffective writing. Second, the book was created to counterbalance the exaggerated claims of software firms-that word processing will make every beginning writer an E.B. White or Ernest Hemingway. Writing On-Line takes a hard look at what computers can and cannot do for writers, and how teachers can and should best use them. Many essays show how to relate word processing and writing process techniques currently being adopted by many composition teachers. Finally, the book has an 11-page, up-to-date bibliography of materials related to the writing process and computer-assisted writing. A useful acquisition for undergraduate and secondary school libraries.-D.S. Barnard Jr., York College of Pennsylvania
